How is this different from ROTC at most colleges?

ROTC at Virginia Tech is exactly the same in other colleges except that ROTC students from Virginia Tech benefit from being in a progressive leadership program within a structured military lifestyle that the VTCC provides. This complements the leadership training offered by the ROTC programs. The result is an officer with a lot more practical leadership experience upon graduation.

How is this different from a traditional Military College?

We are one of only two senior military colleges in the United States located within a major state university. This lets you have a close-knit military college experience you'd find at a traditional military college at the same time you are able to experience all the opportunities a large university has to offer!

Do I have to wear a uniform all the time?

Freshmen cadets wear the uniform from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. on weekdays.

Can I play sports and be in the Corps?

Your priority must be to focus on building a strong academic foundation your first year, but if you are able to play at the highest level at Virginia Tech - either varsity (NCAA) or club, you may participate your first semester. The highest level teams offer their own academic support. We ask that everyone else take one semester to adjust to college academics. Spring semester you can begin to add in extracurricular activites.

How many cadets are there?

Approximately 700.

Do I have to be in ROTC and go in the military upon graduation?

No, however most VTCC cadets also enroll in ROTC for the outstanding career and scholarship opportunities that come with membership.

Can I intern or co-op and be in the Corps?

Yes, you may. However, the ROTC programs allow these activities on a case-by-case basis.

I was not in JROTC in high school, can I still be in the VTCC and ROTC?

Absolutely. 30% of the Corps of Cadets participated in their JROTC unit, but 70% did not. We begin our training from the beginning, so you will not be at a disadvantage if you did not participate in JROTC in high school.

How many women are in the Corps?

Approximately 16%. However, the university is approximately 44% women. Female cadets do not feel as much like a minority here because they are on a regular college campus and they have held held every leadership position in the Corps including regimental commander. The VTCC was one of the first senior military colleges to admit women to its program, even before the federal service academies, and women do very well in our program.

Do I have to pay for my uniforms?

There will be a uniform fee assessed each academic year that will be 1/4 of uniform costs and required alterations. This fee is established by the Tailor Shop and the Office of Budget and Financial Planning. For a ROTC student that completes the fall semester and returns for the spring semester, in good standing within ROTC guidelines, they will normally receive a check from the Department of Defense to cover a portion of the uniform fee. For a Civilian Track cadet student, the requirement will be that they remain in good standing within the corps for the entire academic year. This will qualify for a university credit that will offset a similar amount of the assessed uniform fee. Any portion of the uniform fee that is not subsidized, in either manner, will be the responsibility of the cadet. This year, we anticiapte it will be approximately $150 for all cadets. In the event a cadet leaves the corps, at any point during the academic year, the annual uniform fee will be immediately billed and will be the cadet's responsibility. This applies even if only spending 1 day in the corps.
