Giving to the Corps
Since its founding in 1872, the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets has helped to develop thousands of leaders of exemplary character for the commonwealth and the country. With the help of The Campaign for Virginia Tech: Invent the Future, the Corps is prepared to improve our already excellent program that is the foundation of this great institution. Alumni are critical to the continuing growth and improvement of the Corps; however we are also looking for partnerships from others who share the values the Corps represents. We invite you to become our partner to help continue our mission to train leaders and improve the future for all of our communities by supporting the Corps of Cadets in developing leaders for tomorrow.
Giving To Support The Corps
We need the help of all alumni to pay for these scholarships. Each class has a goal of establishing an ELS of at least $50,000. See class scholarship giving to see how your class is doing.
To date, about 50 of our alumni have endowed scholarships of at least $25,000 in their own name or the memory of someone else (spouse, old lady, Medal of Honor recipient, etc.). Many more have chosen to support the Corps in their estate planning by naming the Corps an estate tax-free beneficiary in their wills. Others want the security of an income stream from a life-income gift (trust or annuity). Visit Ways to Give to find out more about the numerous ways you can help, or call Dave Spracher '70, the Director of Development for the Corps, at 1-800-533-1144.
One of the best ways to support the Corps is to give appreciated securities (individual stocks or mutual funds). You get to deduct the current value as a charitable gift (if you itemize taxes), and you avoid all tax on capital gains. For information on transferring securities, see VT Investment and Debt Management or call Dave.
You may also support the Corps by giving to the Immediate Needs account. These gifts support special Commandant priorities not funded by the state or University, as well as the operation of the VTCCA, e.g. the semi-annual publication of the Corps Review. This account also supports any requirements of the Highty Tighties above the level of University funding (special music, festivals, performances, etc.).
Another account strictly supports the freshman scholarship program for band members to encourage them to devote the additional time and energy required to be a member of the Highty Tighties.
If you choose, you may give on-line at Giving to Virginia Tech. If you prefer hard copy, you may print a gift/pledge form, make your check payable to Virginia Tech Foundation, and mail to:
